Earth Week




The first Earth Day on April 22nd, 1970 mobilized 20 million American citizens, from all walks of life to demonstrate in favor of environmental reform.  In the Cabrillo College and surrounding sustainability community, this celebration of environmental awareness and protection has grown into an entire week of events.  Now observed in over 192 countries, help build into the largest secular holiday in the world and participate in events across Santa Cruz County!

Sustainability Council Earth Week Kick-off!
Start Earth Week off right!  April 17th, 11am-3pm join the Sustainability Council to learn more about student led sustainability efforts at Cabrillo College.  The Sustainability Council will be in the Quad to promote Cabrillo Sustainability Earth Week Activities.  Come by to pick up a Sustain-o-zine, sign up for the compost workshop, or simply to learn how to be more sustainable in your own life.
Inspired by Standing Rock demonstrations, the Cabrillo Sustainability Council is hosting a symposium of collaborative knowledge to co-create a sustainable relationship with the planet through a marriage of native wisdom and scientific innovation.

7th Annual Local & Organic Tasting Fair
Try free samples of local, organic, and sustainable food served at UCSC!  Be delighted by the variety of great produce, snacks, and drinks!  All the while discovering local and organic vendors, and mingling with friends.  Everyone is welcome to attend to this FREE event!

Storytelling 2.0 with Benjamin Von Wong
Check out UCSC hosted Storytelling 2.0 with Benjamin Von Wong.  Benjamin is a photographer, creative director, social influencer, conservationist, and creator of the #MermaidsHatePlastic campaign.

Sustainability Council Compost Demonstration & Workshop
Join the Sustainability Council on Thursday, April 20th, 11am-3pm in the Cabrillo Quad to rub elbows with Wormy, the famous compost worm, and learn more about the wonderful world of compost.  Or better yet!  Meet up with them at the Horticulture complex on Friday April 21st 230pm-5pm to learn how to build worm bin.  The first 20 participants get to take home one of their very own!



Cabrillo Bike Co-op Roast & Coast BBQ & Bike Ride
Thursday April 20th, 1pm-4pm, meet up at Cabrillo College's Bike Co-op for a BBQ fuel-up, followed by a group ride to the coast.
 





A Darker Frame for our Options
Presenter Richard Nolthenius, PhD, will give a public talk with a Q&A to follow.





The Earth Summit serves as a place for UCSC students, UCSC staff, and the local community (that's us!) to collectively envision a sustainable future, and discuss ideas for action.  There will be a performance by the Climate Music Project, multiple UCSC student speakers, a UCSC Students of Color caucus, tabling, and art activities.

A screening of Oscar Nominated director Josh Fox's investigation of the greatest threat our world has ever known--climate change.  Fox explores the indomitable aspects of the human spirit that no calamity can take away.  Post screening community music and dance follows.

Cabrillo Marches for Science
Participate in the unprecedented global event taking place in over 425 communities.  Stand strong with the Cabrillo Natural History Club and STEM staff, students, and enthusiasts.

Meet up Saturday, April 22nd at the Cabrillo Bus Stop at 8:45am
